My Personal Colour Analysis Experience
Personal colour theory or personal colour analysis is a method used to determine the best colour season for clothing, accessories, makeup and jewellery to best compliment a person. It takes into consideration their skin tone, eye colour, hair colour and is used in style consulting and personal wardrobe planning to help each individual build a wardrobe that allows them to look their best. The concept has been around for a long time, originating in the early 1900s and having resurgence in popularity over time, for example in the 80s when brought to mainstream popularity by Carole Jackson and again by netizens now in the 2020s!
WHy find out your colour palette?
In colour analysis it is believed that wearing the incorrect colours highlights features such as wrinkles, dark circles and blemishes whilst wearing the correct colour palette enhances an individual’s natural beauty making them look healthy, bright and radiant. In an image conscious world this allows us to shop in a more informed way.
Personal colour analysis’ is available in most countries at various price points and with increasing popularity has even become a filter on instagram and tiktok to self analyse at home! On my most recent trip to South Korea in June this year I decided to get my colours done whilst in Seoul. I’ve always felt confident that I know what style of clothes suits my body shape best, but being fair skinned with blonde hair and blue eyes I found that some colours washed out my skin and didn’t suit me as well as others. I’ve always favoured wearing colours over muted palettes but I wanted to know for sure what suits me best – so why not consult an expert?
The colour analysis categories follow the seasons, with sub categories (of varying names dependent on company) in each as below:
Spring: Clear/Light/Warm
Summer: Soft / Light/ Cool
Autumn: Soft/ Deep/ Warm
Winter: Clear/ Deep/ Cool
For my analysis I booked with Suzi @ Meime Colour & Beauty in Yeoksam Seoul. During my personal colour consultation I removed my makeup and tied back my hair in order for Suzi to see my true skin tones, from there we jumped right in. Suzi is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and made me feel at ease as she spoke through the process. Suzi used a variety of fabric swatches held across my body and under my face to determine which colours suit me best and pointing out when certain tones or shades brought out my dark circles and wrinkles or enhanced my natural glow. She looked at my skin tone, eye colour, hair colour and even the colour of my veins to accurately provide my analysis. We then looked at which metals suit me best for jewellery, what patterns would suit me well in clothes, what makeup styles best complimented me and what hair colours would suit me if I ever decided to dye my hair.
By the end of the session Suzi determined that I was a Summer light and I can wear both gold and silver jewellery in delicate and feminine designs, but rose gold does not work for my skin. Suzi provided me with a full pdf of information on my colour seasons with a breakdown of my analysis and provided me with small colour chart cards to take with me when I shop. I keep these in my phone case so I have them wherever I go.
so how have i used my personal colour analyis?
Since having my colour analysis I have been able to confidently update my wardrobe, donating and selling on items that didn’t fit into my colour season. I have found that I shop more consciously making more informed decisions instead of impulse buying something just because I like it. In the long run I believe this will not only improve my self confidence but also benefit my bank balance and the environment as Im more likely to shop responsibly. Of course I may sometimes stray away from my colour family but I only do for items that I really love.
I’m a big believer in following your own personal fashion sense and shopping for your individual style before shopping the trends. This way I can still enjoy fashion but only pick up on the trends when I want to or when they best suit my own style and colour theory.
I’d love to know if this is something you would do too! Have you had a personal colour analysis? How has it changed your life and your wardrobe? Let me know in the comments or send me a message! I’d love to chat 🙂
